January 2015-Week 1

Happy New Year all. The kids (like most of us) did nothing but party in the fourth quarter. So since today’s donation came from a teacher and supermom, I decided it was time to hit the books.

Supplies:
Matching puzzles, chalkboards, the cool chalk

We started by doing a relay race matching game, but we had quite a few cheaters in our midst resulting in a flip flop throwing tantrum given by Preaw…so that ended after two rounds.

JJ really struggles with reading and the kids are so sweet and patient with her. Preaw (the flip flop thrower) does not get the sympathy vote.

Next we did our little “spell-slap” game. Same as all of the circle clapping games, but the person whose hand falls on the last letter of the word has to pull it away. Always slam dunk when hitting people is allowed.

Then it was time to go to work. We laid out all our words and students were allowed to come up and take 2 at a time back to their chalkboard to practice spelling and word recognition.

We had to extend class time by an hour because 4 of the munchkins did not want to quit until they’d done every single word. It’s amazing what they’re capable of given a little positive reinforcement.

They worked so well individually that I’m going to use the remainder of the donation to put these supplies in all the fourth grade classrooms at school next week to encourage them to play in their down time (which for whatever reason they have A TON of at their school). The puzzles come in several different subjects so we can swap them between rooms from week to week.

As always, we ended with a lengthy goodbye snuggle and photo sesh.
